Fleischmann Slot Car Racing Means Old School Duels
![]() |
The Fleischmann slot car racing set called Auto Rallye has many slot car fans who miss it greatly. The Fleischmann company apparently stopped making slot cars and tracks over a dozen years ago. The reason is not known. The Fleischmann slot car racing products were made with the quality and precision expected of German products. Some fans suspect that the tools, molds, and materials needed to make new Fleischmann slot car racing equipment are safely stored away somewhere, ready for action. That is more wishful thinking than reality, because new Fleischmann products have not been seen on the market since production ceased.
The Fleischmann slot car racing Auto Rallye set was in production for almost two dozen years. It had several unique qualities which set it apart from modern sets. Modern slot cars have slick plastic wheels. Sometimes magnets are put in the cars, or even certain adhesives are applied to the tires, to keep today's slot cars on the track. Fleischmann cars had softer rubber wheels, which gripped the track curves much like the tires on real cars. The Fleischmann slot car racing tracks and cars are from the "old school" and are sorely missed by collectors and fans.
The track of the Fleischmann slot car racing set was special too. It was made from hard black plastic like most tracks. However, it was molded so that the surface was textured, giving it the appearance of real asphalt. This texturing also provided extra traction in the curves. Both flat and banked curves were available, and some of the tracks could accommodate up to six Fleischmann slot car racing vehicles! Vertical track loops were available. The starting section of the Fleischmann slot car racing Auto Rallye set had a built-in counter that counted up to 99 laps. The amount of detail on these sets was amazing.
The cars in the Fleischmann slot car racing sets were special too. Most were constructed with a sidewinder transmission and a standard motor with 0.25 amps and 12 volts. Cars could be supercharged with a 0.6 amp replacement motor! The company originally produced scale model trains, and the attention to detail was apparent in the Fleischmann slot car racing line of products. For example, the convertible 3210 Green Ford Lotus (complete with miniature driver) was sold with the 3000 Start, 3015 Sport, and 3005 Touring racing kits. Mercedes 250 SL, Porsche Carerra and Alfa Romeo Fleischmann slot car racing vehicles were also sold. The go-cart model was perhaps one of the most novel models.
Most Fleischmann slot car racing sets and parts are in the hands of collectors. Many can also be purchased online at specialty slot car websites or online auctions. If you are starting a collection, you should definitely seek out Fleischmann slot car racing accessories.
